Tifo Roundup - MLS Matchweek 2
MLS came back last week, and with it a flood of Tifos. This week, more teams had their first home openers and a shot at displaying their own club pride. Check out the amazing fan creativity for MLS matchweek 2 below.
St. Louis CITY SC
It was the first ever home game for the new St. Louis CITY SC, and it was a sellout! The club and the city have certainly done their work to drum up support for their new home team. With a 2-0 undefeated streak against Austin last week and Charlotte this week, the club is delivering! You have to wonder if the community fanbase will maintain its energy, but with the unique perspective of a majority-female board, the club seems to be engaging the community in creative ways focused on inclusivity.
LAFC
Bragging rights go to current MLS champions LAFC, and of course fans show up with a tifo to remind rivals the Portland Timbers. This tifo was probably meant for last week’s postponed El Traffico match with LA Galaxy, but the Timbers are worthy opponents, who despite being three goals down struck back with two goals in the second half.
Chicago Fire FC
It was a cold night at Soldier Field for the Chicago Fire season opener against NYCFC, but that didn’t keep supporters from Sector Latino from showing support with their Chicago flag-inspired tifo. The cold weather may have caused a number of injuries for the Fire, but hopefully things warm up for them in their upcoming match against the Philadelphia Union.
Columbus Crew
This tifo gives very french-y nod to Crew coach Wilfried Nancy, with the delightful pun “Vive le Créwvolution”. We can’t help but notice the artistic homage to the former club logo, rather than the current official design used by the club…which we of course ripped apart on the Footy Museum Podcast.
New York Red Bulls
The New York Red Bulls embrace their New Jersey roots with this stoic tifo depicting the Sopranos. Actress Edie Falco’s character wasn’t included on the tifo, but she was there in person to support the team as they drew 0-0 with Nashville.
Colorado Rapids
In the spring of its 27th year, the Rapids did not quite reach a Rocky Mountain high with their 0-0 draw to Sporting KC. But this tifo sure is pretty, and I’d have loved to have it as a poster on my dorm room wall. You can ship it to the Footy Museum PO box, Centennial 38!
